The nomadic Apache tribe is made up of Chiricahua, Mescalero, and Jicarilla groups. Their nomadic lifestyle allowed them to embrace a resilient lifestyle and learn new skills to survive by hunting, gathering, and trading. They often continue to practice a matrilineal society where lineage is traced through the mother. Apache women have played an important role in maintaining their culture, often through their use and cultivation of native plants and historical practices and clothing. They are strong, fierce mothers, in charge of child rearing and teaching of the old ways and skills.
