The Journey

The Journey
The Journey

While I stood there, I saw more than I can tell, and I understood more than I saw; for I was seeing in a sacred manner the shapes of all things in the spirit, and the shape of all shapes as they must live together like one being."
-BLACK ELK [Ogala]

In this painting, five Navajo women with flowing, vibrant shawls are walking in an area reminiscent of Canyon de Chelly. They are unified in their purpose. Perhaps they are going to participate in a dance, a ritual, a ceremony—but the journey of "going together"—the harmony and deep connection to sky, earth, wind, each other, is what is important—the connection to environment and community, sacred.

I was inspired by the Indian spiritual values of harmony with nature and deep connection with family, community and environment. We are never really alone, but part of a whole which gives our life meaning and direction.
